To become an electrician, you must complete an apprenticeship that combines trade school with learning on the job. This includes getting your Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and passing some licensing assessments.
Note that an electrician is a restricted calling in Queensland, meaning strict rules apply to employing persons under the age of 18. Students in years 11 and 12 may be eligible for school-based apprenticeships if they meet the relevant requirements. However, some employers may require you to have completed Year 12.

1. Tafe studies
If you’re not sure whether an electrician's career is for you, you can always start out by doing a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) at Tafe. This way, you get a taste for the industry and whether it feels right for you. The certificate takes just 7-13 weeks of study depending on your program of choice.
2. Apprenticeship
An electrical apprenticeship combines practical experience with structured studies through a registered training organisation. It usually takes four years to complete one. At the end, you’ll have both practical experience and a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30811).
You can do your apprenticeship either with a sole trader or a company. Throughout the apprenticeship, your supervisor will teach you professional skills in real life. What’s great is that apprenticeships are paid, too! The rates will depend on your age and location, but they also go up each year as you gain more experience.
3. Apply for your license
After completing your apprenticeships, you can apply for an electrical license to work unsupervised. Keep in mind that registration and licensing requirements vary state to state, so remember to check with the licensing body in your state.
