How Can I Save Money When Using My Air Conditioner?

As we move into the hotter months your air conditioner is likely to get more of a workout but that does not have to mean that your electricity bill skyrockets. Here are our tips on how you can keep cool during summer without a huge increase in cost.

Choose the right cooling for your home

The cooling system that is right for your home depends on the size and design of your home and how well insulated it is. If you are looking to install or upgrade your current system, we recommend talking to an expert first. They will be able to provide guidance on what options would work best for your home.

Pre-cool when possible

If you know the next day will be hot, leave your windows open the night before to pre-cool your home. A well-insulated home will retain the cool air the next day making it easier for the air conditioner to cool the home down. Just close the windows before it starts to heat up.

Only use the aircon when you are home

Switch off your air conditioner when you are not home. This will not only save you money but also helps the environment. If your house is well insulated and you draw curtains or blinds before your leave your house should be able to retain the cool air even after switching your air conditioner off.

Adjust your temperature

Every degree cooler you set your air conditioner can increase your energy consumption by up to 10 per cent. You can save money by increasing your preferred temperature by a few degrees. We recommend having your temperature set to 24 degrees in Summer. This will ensure that your home stays a comfortable temperature without the added cost to your electricity bill.

Organise regular maintenance

If the filter in your air conditioner is clogged it will have to work twice as hard to pump out cool air meaning more power is used. You should aim to clean your filter every couple of months to ensure optimal performance. This will not only save you money on your electricity bill but also ensure that your air conditioner does not stop working altogether.

We also recommend getting a professional to service your air conditioner at least once a year. Getting this done once a year will not only ensure the longevity of your air conditioning system but also save you money in the long run.
