New Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation will ensure Queensland has the safest homes in the world when it comes to fire safety. The new legislation states that all Queensland dwellings will be required to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarm in all bedrooms, hallways and on every level of a property. Having interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all areas of the home will give you an early warning of a fire and assist you to have a quick escape. When one alarm sounds off, all of the alarms will sound giving you the best chance of survival.
What is a photoelectric smoke alarm and why do I need it?
Photoelectric smoke alarms are smarter at detecting fires because they respond to a range of fire types. They are very good at detecting smouldering fires and overheated wiring. They also do not ‘false alarm’ as much as the old ionisation types. When purchasing smoke alarms ensure they comply with the AS 3786-2014. Also, ensure your fire alarm has a test button and a date. You can then regularly test your smoke alarm and replace it after 10 years.
Do my smoke alarms need to be hardwired?
Yes if possible. This means if there is ceiling access available to run a cable then the smoke alarms should be hardwired. However, in apartments or bottom levels of houses, hard wiring is not always possible. In this case, we use a wireless smoke alarm with a 10-year lithium battery.
